I've been free to experiment, encouraged to grow, celebrated when sales are good, and comforted through hard times by my fellow artists there. 1890 has come to be my home away from home.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Lately I have been anxious to get work completed, feeling like I don't have time to luxuriate in the creative process. "Produce, produce" my internal voice screams. I've also completely neglected this blog. Working full time has many perks, but time to create is not one of them.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I began to feel uninspired by my subject matter, birds and birds on wires, image transfers, layers and layers of smooth wax. The process I have perfected and love but needed something new. S<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">o I began experimenting with different mediums and different styles.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">At first I tried going back to roosters, and still life paintings, work that requires tremendous skill and attention to detail. I liked the results but still didn't feel very inspired. Finally I tried to produce abstract paintings, not like anything I've ever done before, abstract landscapes.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This one was done with encaustic paint and I like the results. Since this, I've pulled out the acrylics and am now going to take a class in cold wax and oils. I'm back to having fun!<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

Here are two pieces in my vintage appliance series. I've been doing these since December but am only now getting around to posting any. Occasionally I take a break from birds and draw other things, in this case, kitchen appliances. Or at least that's what I did during the winter. These two are also part of the tiny (4"x 4") series. I'm so grateful for the time I spend in my studio these days. It's not there nearly as much as I would prefer, but I am so lucky to have the time I do.

The tiny pieces were a big hit at Open Studios, thank you everyone for coming out and supporting. They also helped dislodge a little creative block, that's been gnawing at me for the past several months. I now know that feeling stuck is a part of how it goes for me, but this last round went on longer and felt more permanent than ever before (of course). I have tools to apply acceptance to most areas of my life, apparently my artistic process is left a little behind.

I am saying yes to invitations to participate in exhibitions this year. I have a piece in a small venue in North Beach and will be in several shows in November and December, including Open Studios on November 1 & 2. One of the shows will be in a community acupuncture clinic on Valencia Street, an intimate clinic setting. I decided to make tiny pieces for the show. All of my work is small (today I saw an artist at Hunters Point, Randy Bechelheimer whose work averaged 64" x 96". The pieces I am working on for this show are all 4 x 4. This is the first of a series.

In August, a small group of fellow artists and I took a print making class with Jenny Robinson - trace mono type with chine colle. I had no idea what any of that meant, but Jenny said I would like it and I believe her. We worked hard and long and had a lot of fun, plus we all got some great prints. While in the class, I pulled this print, and was convinced it was garbage. My class mates and oohed and aahed and all I could see were the mistakes. Mono type is a medium full of surprises and one that takes me way out of my comfort zone.

It's been a while since I have photographed and talked about my work in the studio. As I mentioned earlier this year, I found this sisal coffee sack on my walk between my job and my studio. Now, I am waiting for an order of four more that I bought online. Of course, I would rather tell the fun story of "found and free" but the truth is, I love the texture, the letters, and the printing on the sack - I love everything about the sisal sacks. I did find this one, but stay tuned for the less romantic versions to follow. These will be on display at Open Studios at 1890 Bryant Street in San Francisco on November 1 & 2 from 11:00AM - 6:00PM.

One of my work pals asked me to make a picture for her sweetheart using this coffee bag as a background. Apparently their trip to Mexico was so romantic she wanted to be able to commemorate it by giving her honey some art for her birthday. I was so happy to do the commission and ended up making a second one for the office (in honor of the yummy coffee she brought back). Working with these new materials is proving to be super inspiring.

I am having fun with the sisal coffee bag I found walking from my office to my studio a couple of months ago. This is the second of four in the series that I have completed. I had been thinking of how to utilize fabric from some of the clothing that is strewn all over the streets of San Francisco. This idea is a little scary, but since deciding to recycle, I have found some really cool stuff including a gorgeous scarf in my planter in front of my house that I glued to a panel yesterday. I like letting the City inspire me, even with its sad discarded fabric and clothing.

The producer and her mother embarked on a challenge to see if the show could track down stories and make these so called "conversation killers" interesting. The topics included: what you are eating, how you slept, your dreams, menstruation, and routes, among other things. It was a fun show, partly because these are all topics I like to talk about, but also because of the banter between producer and mother.

I have since begun a list of my own: what I did at work (unless I cured cancer or created glasses for otherwise blind babies), the unexceptional work life of most people is not interesting, at all, ever. I have also added to the list excuses for why I am late or why I have not been doing something I promised myself I would do, like exercising or blogging. So I will not bother to discuss why blogging has not made its way to my to do list. I will say, I still paint and play in my studio, and am very happy when new things emerge. Happy New Year!
One of the artists at 1890 Bryant saw me embedding stamps into paintings so he gave me a bunch from his father's stamp collection. I decided to use color as a design element to create this back ground. I had this piece out during open studios as a work in progress and it got a lot of attention. Now that it has the birds, I can call it done.dk haashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982745640520315005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4231373007153778188.post-77723394641633043292013-04-14T11:25:00.000-07:002013-04-14T11:36:26.353-07:00"Muni Barn" Drypoint Monoprint EtchingWorking out printing techniques is crazy complicated.

It has been a year since I started my job. A year of adjusting to tucking my life in between work. It has been a quick year. The job is exciting and I get to learn new things and be stretched in ways that I am grateful to be experiencing. But getting to my studios is a big challenge. Last weekend I made some prints and it was seamless. The inspiration does not always show up that way and with time short, it has to be there in ways that feel urgent. So the other day I was there with nothing to say and I found myself shouting "come on, get there, no time to clean the studio and wait for you to arrive." As if I can bargain with my creativity.

Last fall I took a dry point etching class with Jenny Robinson. We learned how to do this low tech printmaking process with illustration board instead of copper plates. I did not think I had the capacity to think, plan, and execute like print makers - this stuff is the opposite of painting, all layered and backwards. But the class was awesome and I have made a couple of plates since then. I am finally getting around to blogging about them.

I finished this commission today and found myself pretty excited and challenged to be painting, rendering, creating highlights and shadows, in wax. I haven't worked on a still life of this magnitude (16" x 16") for years. It was really fun to get the pigments out and be reminded how rewarding it is to struggle and finally make things appear three dimensional in wax.

I just completed a four day printmaking class with Jenny Robinson and my gang of artist friends. This is not one of the pieces that I made, but it's a funny thing the way printmaking and encaustic painting overlap. They each demand humility and a huge capacity to let go. However, in printmaking, once you put the print through the press, or cut the plate - there is no going back. I'm not sure how much of that permanence I can take. I am super excited about combining the two medias and seeing what happens.

I continue to spend time in the studio but the process has slowed considerably as I focus on learning a new job and taking good care of myself while I do. I know art is a crucial element of self care and that I will find my way back to a regular routine, but for now, I'm stealing studio time and getting super excited when I do. Here's a fun little surprise that happened last night.
This is my submission for Art for AIDS this year. I did it using six different image transfers, which I had never done before. I'm amazed they all took, and I didn't have to redo any of them. Reapplying carbon transfers means scraping all the carbon and bits of paper off, re-heating the wax, and applying a new transfer. I'm not sure how well all that would have worked on a multiple, so I was happy I didn't have to learn about it (yet).

Iselin created this piece for her friend. Really. She contacted me and said she wanted Clarky, which has long ago gone to someone's home, or something similar. I don't have anything remotely similar because I haven't used paper like this in a good long while. Ever since I discovered all those bright, groovy fabrics, I've been so obsessed with big and bold, that I forgot all about these gorgeous little mono-print papers.

I am very happy with how this turned out. Hopefully Iselin's friend will agree.

I've begun to play with collage a little. I have so much respect for people who do it successfully - making an interesting composition out of scraps of things is really challenging. In this piece, I dipped my toe in a wee bit just to see how well the additional fabric and paper would adhere just by placing it into the wax. I've prepped a couple of panels but the process has me yearning for acrylics.
